Our Bereavement Program

The HSWO Bereavement Program offers a variety of services to provide care, guidance, education, and support after the death of your loved one.  Your journey through grief may present many peaks and valleys.  The Bereavement Team is here to help you mourn and make the necessary adjustments in your life without the one you love.

The families and loved ones of HSWO patients may receive services throughout the first year of bereavement.  They are free of charge and provided by trained, specialized grief counselors.

The following services are available:

A Grief Education Program - This 13 month program consists of mailings that provide information on a wide range of topics.  It includes discussion of the phases, feelings and complexities of grief, with practical suggestions for dealing with them.

Specialized Bereavement Support Groups - Participating in support groups with others who have experienced similar losses can encourage adjustment and healing.  Throughout the year, our established Grief Resource Center offers specialized support groups for specific kinds of loss.  Please contact our Grief Resource Center at (580) 248-5885 for more information regarding times and places for these groups.

Family Meetings - When the death of a family member results in marked disruptions in how the family relates to each other, family meetings may be helpful by encouraging healthy growth and understanding in family interactions.

Individual Counseling - Short-term individual counseling is offered to our HSWO families at no charge.  Grief counselors offer support and guidance in dealing with the grief process and understanding grief reactions.  Individuals may choose to continue with counseling after their 13 months by using an affordable sliding scale payment option.

A Memorial Service - Once a year "A Day to Honor" takes place to acknowledge our loved ones who have died.  This memorial service appeals to persons of all faiths and outlooks.  It provides an opportunity to join the Hospice of Southwest Oklahoma staff, volunteers, and others who are grieving in the community in remembering your loved ones. All HSWO's families will be notified as to the time, date, and place of the service.

The Holiday Support Workshop - The holidays are especially stressful and painful after the death of a loved one.  The "Empty Chair" workshop offers an opportunity to learn about grief during the holidays and gain some practical coping skills.

A Lending Library - The Grief Resource Center has a variety of books, articles and handouts about grief to help you learn about the grieving process.

The Grief Resource Center is offered to the entire community and surrounding areas as a knowledge base for grief.  We offer work place seminars, educational workshops, support groups, and memorial remembrance.  The GRC has been a major proponent in helping with the creation of local organizations in our community, such as Compassionate Friends and Heartbeat.  We work with the Center of Creative Living to offer a Caregiver support group that meets weekly.  The Grief Resource Center offers individual and family counseling on a very affordable sliding scale fee.  We have a lending library that is available to anyone in need of resources for the grieving process.

If you would like more information regarding the grieving process or would like to contact or schedule a visit, call 248-5885 or email our Bereavement Manager.
